Fire and Safety Signs For Your Warehouse

Last modified date

Warehouses are busy places with a lot going on and some extremely dangerous equipment moving around, so it is important to have all of your bases covered with regards to important fire and safety signs you need in your warehouse.

It is a legal requirement to display certain signs in prominent spots around your warehouse, remember if an incident occurs it may be you that is held responsible if the legislation has not been followed correctly.

At Manutan UK, we make it our business to supply you with everything you need with regards to health and safety products and advice; ensuring that you are able to get on with your day to day tasks.

With this in mind, this article has been put together as a guide to cover some of the signs you need to have in your warehouse. Please note this is not an exhaustive guide. All of the fire safety information specifically for warehouses can be found here in a guide that has been put together by the Government. It conforms to the latest changes in fire safety legislation.

For more general advice on health and safety, the Government has collected a hub of resources here and it contains all of the advice, forms and templates you need.

To help you along, here are some of the signs you need to display in your warehouse:

Escape signs

You need to make sure you have put systems and processes in place that enable everyone in the warehouse to exit the building safely in the event of a fire. Part of this means installing clear and unambiguous signs which tell people where their escape routes are.

Escape signs like the ones seen on page 108 of the Government’s document are what you need. Examples of these signs are available from Key here.

You may not know but escape signs must be pictographic and not just contain text. An example of this sort of sign can be found here.

Health and safety poster

The Health and Safety Law Statutory Notice must be displayed prominently in every workplace in the UK. This could not be more important in a warehouse where things could go wrong.

Since the law came in this year, it has been illegal to not have this. As well as being a legal requirement, this sign is very useful to you and your employees if filled in correctly as it states clearly who is responsible for your health and safety at work.

Action on discovering a fire sign

This sign is also a legal requirement and also incredibly important to display in a place where everyone can see it. The sign tells you what to do and where to assemble and is vital to have. This is true especially if you are running a business where you do not know who is going to be in your building from day to day. In a warehouse, there are delivery drivers, people visiting from other parts of the business and visitors who do not know your procedures.

The “action on discovering a fire” sign can be purchased from Manutan UK here.

As we’ve said, this is definitely not an exhaustive guide to fire safety, health and safety or even workplace signage. Familiarise yourself with the requirements laid out in the government fire safety risk assessment document and make sure that you spend time reading the information on the HSE website as well.
