Definitions:
dB - the decibel (dB) or noise unit, expressed on a logarithmic scale. An increase of 3dB will in reality double the noise level.
Attenuation - indicates the reduction in noise level. The higher the attenuation number then the higher the noise reduction level.
Simplified Noise Reduction (SNR) - following testing, products are given a SNR, a calculated figure which indicates approximately the average attenuation over all frequencies. For example, in an environment measuring 90dB(c) a product with 30 SNR will result in the effective A-weighted sound pressure level inside the protected ear to 60 DB(a)
